ASID Names Student Chapter Award Winners

Washington, D.C. - The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) is proud to announce the winners of the 2016 ASID Student Chapter Awards. Presented annually, the awards recognize the most outstanding student members, chapters, and faculty advisors who promote the ASID student member experience as an enriching learning tool for future interior designers. Award recipients will receive recognition during the State of the Society address at the annual Chapter Leadership Conference, July 16, 2016, in Minneapolis. 

“Recognizing the designers of today and the designers of tomorrow is core to the Society’s mission,” said Randy Fiser, ASID CEO. “The quality of this year’s entries has been exceptional, with student leaders and educators who go above and beyond to connect students to the impact of design. We are thrilled to honor their achievements.”

Judges for the 2016 Student Chapter Awards included Michael Bent, Allied ASID, Junior Designer, IA Interior Architects; Tamie Glass, ASID, IIDA, RID, Associate Professor, Interior Design Program Director, University of Texas; and Beth Harmon-Vaughan, Ph.D., ASID, FIIDA, LEED AP, Managing Director, Principal, Gensler, and Adjunct Professor at Arizona State University.

Student Chapter of the Year – Colorado State UniversityColorado State
For the second year in a row, the ASID Colorado State University (ASID-CSU) Student Chapter has been honored as the ASID Student Chapter of the Year. Last fall, they were named one of the top five chapters in the country for recruiting members, increasing their membership by 58.8 percent. This year, the chapter launched a strong publicity campaign that included member visits to classrooms to present on the fundamentals and benefits of ASID membership. The ASID-CSU Student Chapter helped clean up homes and yards in Fort Collins, Colo., and volunteered for RamRide, a service that offers students a safe ride home, in order to serve the community and fundraise for future events. Overall, the chapter has built a strong foundation meant to ensure stability and growth for years to come.

Honorable Mention – Mississippi State UniversityJeremy Clark

ASID Student Chapter Leader of the Year – Jeremy Clark, Student ASID, Auburn University
Jeremy Clark has taken on the responsibility of reinventing his chapter and its relevancy to students at Auburn University. His energy and charisma led the chapter to recruit the second largest number of attendees at LAUNCH: The ASID National Student Summit, second only to the host school, Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). His advocacy, ingenuity, and resolve led the ASID Alabama Chapter to provide partial scholarships for 13 Auburn students to attend LAUNCH. Those who work with Jeremy say that he accomplishes his goals with a smile, making his hard work and dedication seem effortless. Clark is a junior enrolled in the CIDA-accredited Auburn University interior design program. Serving as the ASID President-elect for the 2015-16 term, he is actively involved in planning various events and recruiting new members. Under his leadership, the ASID Auburn Chapter has the distinction of being the largest in the southeast.

Honorable Mention – Arik Spaulding, Student ASID, President Scottsdale Community College

Student Chapter Faculty Advisor of the Year – Gera King, ASID, Scottsdale Community College
As the Scottsdale Community College (ASID-SCC) faculty advisor, Gera King strives to ensure that every student is learning and receiving a valuable experience. ASID-SCC student enrollment is directly related to King’s focus on increasing student participation throughout the year. ASID-SCC is ranked fourth in the nation for the most active student members within ASID chapters. For the chapter’s community service project with Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Tribe, Gera worked with former student and community member, Normalinda Sidney, to locate a project, secure furniture and framed children’s artwork from tribal inventory, and worked with Sherwin Williams to donate paint. She plans to retire in 2016.

 

 

Honorable Mention – Stephanie Clemons, Ph.D., FASID, FIDEC, Colorado State University

Student Chapter Event of the Year – Stage Off, Scottsdale Community College
Stage Off, an event created by the ASID-SCC Student Chapter, encouraged peers to participate in a student design competition by submitting before and after photos of their design work. Stage Off offered students at any level of expertise the opportunity to compete and receive professional feedback. Representatives from the Arizona North Chapter awarded the winners with a free student membership for one year.

Honorable Mention – Service Learning Charette, University of Central Missouri
